Work Detail A company from Iran has been awarded a contract for conducting the scientific modelling at the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant. The dam is set to become the world’s second largest hydroelectric power plant. The Iranian based company, the Water Research Institute (WRI) revealed this on Wednesday. It said that it had won the contract to conduct physical hydraulic modelling at the Rogun Dam. This mega dam project is situated approximately 110 kilometres to the north east of Tajikistan capital Dushanbe. The CEO of WRI, Mohammad Reza Kavianpour, stated, “the contractors of European countries and even Russia had submitted applications for the modelling contract of this mega dam project.” Project Factsheet Cost: 2-5 billion Owner: Government of Tajikistan Contractor/developers: Webuild SpA Height: 335 meters Capacity: 3.6GW Details of the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant Contract Kavianpour said, “this contract will entail the modelling of a water tunnel. It will also entail development of a diversion dam, adding that WRI will wind up the project in the coming 3 months.” Rogun dam is set to become the world’s second largest hydroelectric power plant once it attains full power generation capacity of 3.6 gigawatts (GW). Currently, Tajikistan has completed works on two 0.6 GW units of the mega hydroelectric dam. Works are still ongoing on for the other remaining 4 units. The embankment dam which is being constructed in the southern part of Tajikistan at the Vakhsh River, will possess a capacity of holding up to 14 billion cubic meters of water. Developers of Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant Furthermore, a total of 5 major companies inclusive of Tunnel Sadd of Iran, have been commissioned to construct the mega Rogun hydroelectric power plant project. Another four companies are involved in the dam’s side-line projects. Moreover, according to the statements that were released by the ministry of energy of Iran, “hundreds of the engineers from Iran and even technicians have been working in the Asian country (Tajikistan) and part of the mega Rogun hydroelectric power plant project.” Moreover, companies from Iran have played key roles in the development of major dam projects in the Asian and Arabian countries. They have been part of the projects over the past decades. Lastly, just to note, the former Iranian president Ebrahim Raeisi, attended an opening ceremony in Sri Lanka. He attended the ceremony for the inauguration of the Uma Oya hydroelectric and irrigation project. Tajikistan Current Energy State “Generally, Tajikistan is an energy deficit country. This means that the domestic energy consumption surpasses its overall energy production,” a report indicates.”The electricity exports of Tajikistan inclusive of its vast hydropower resources totalled to 4.5% of the country’s total exports in the year 2021. This percentage was equivalent to $95 million.” “The country’ hydropower potential is estimated at a remarkable 527 billion kWh annually. This surpasses the current electricity consumption of the central Asia countries by 300%,” the report added. “Currently, the country’s largest project is the Roghun Dam. This will be the world’s second largest with a capacity of 3.6GW upon completion.”
