In a significant advancement for Oman’s mining sector, Minerals Development Oman (MDO) has signed a crucial mining concession agreement with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM). This agreement authorizes MDO to explore and develop strategic minerals within concession area 51F, located in the Al Wusta Governorate, covering an extensive 2,156 square kilometers in the Wilayat of Mahout. The area is rich in high-value deposits of silica, limestone, and dolomite, which are vital for driving industrial growth and economic diversification in Oman.
The increasing demand for silica, particularly from industries such as glass manufacturing and renewable energy technologies, has positioned MDO to become Oman’s first silica sand miner. According to a Syndicated Analytics Report, the GCC silica sand market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 6.7%, reaching an estimated $513.5 million by 2027. Preliminary studies indicate that the site holds significant reserves of silica ore with purity levels exceeding 97%.
Nasser Al Maqbali, CEO of MDO, emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging Oman’s mineral wealth to foster investment opportunities and generate employment. “Our exploration of silica resources reflects Oman’s untapped potential to support critical industries, especially those related to the energy transition,” he stated.
With this new agreement, MDO’s total concession area has expanded to 24,119 square kilometers, reinforcing its role in Oman’s economic diversification efforts. MDO is also involved in several strategic exploration projects targeting key minerals, including copper, chromite, and gypsum. The company recently marked the groundbreaking of the Lasil and Al Baydha Copper Mines Redevelopment Project, expected to produce 800,000 tonnes of copper ore annually.
MDO’s initiatives align with Oman’s national objectives of enhancing the industrial base and supporting sustainable development. The company is dedicated to responsible mining practices, community collaboration, and local economic empowerment, particularly in remote areas. Through training programs and partnerships with local suppliers, MDO aims to boost local employment and foster community development.
As MDO continues to expand its project portfolio, it is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Oman’s mining industry, unlocking new opportunities for sustainable growth. |
