Work Detail John Holland has won a US$322 million contract to build the first section of the Parramatta Light Rail project in New South Wales, Australia. The developer is responsible for constructing the first 1.3 km of a new light rail route, which includes a 320-m bridge over the Parramatta River between Melrose Park and Wentworth Point. The bridge will accommodate buses, light rail, cyclists, and pedestrians, and will be part of a 9.5 km network of walking and cycling paths. It will be the first major bridge over the river since the Ryde Bridge, nearly 40 years ago, and will also enhance nearby public spaces, including Archer Park. Stage 2 will connect to Stage 1 (and the Parramatta CBD) to Sydney Olympic Park via Camellia, Rydalmere, Ermington, Melrose Park, and Wentworth Point with 14 stops over 10 km. Stage 1 is in the final stages of testing and commissioning, with passenger services expected to start before the end of 2024. The design and early works are due to begin in 2024 before the construction of the major bridge starts in 2025.
