In all of 2023, centralized solar plants totaled 4.02 GW. The source accounts for more than half of the expansion of centralized generation in the country in 2024.
Centralized solar power plants added 4.05 GW of installed capacity to the Interconnected Electric System between January and September 2024, surpassing the 4.02 GW installed in all of last year. Generation capacity expansion in Brazil in 2024 through September totaled 7.8 GW, more than half of which came from solar sources. Including wind, intermittent renewable sources accounted for approximately 90% of capacity expansion through September.
In September alone, the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) recorded an increase of 711.33 MW in the countrys installed electricity generation capacity. The expansion in September was due to the entry into commercial operation of 24 plants, including 11 solar photovoltaic plants (491.83 MW), 10 wind farms (117.20 MW) and three thermal power plants (102.30 MW).
Currently, centralized solar plants in Brazil total 15.6 GW, according to Aneel data, out of a total of 206 GW of installed capacity in the SIN. Half of this capacity, or 103 GW, comes from large hydroelectric plants – small hydroelectric plants and hydroelectric generating stations account for another 6.2 GW. Wind energy totals 32 GW, fossil fuel thermal plants 30 GW and biomass 17.5 GW.
If distributed generation is included, solar has been leading the expansion of installed capacity in the country for three years now. In 2023, of a total of 18.6 GW added in the country, including all sources, in centralized generation (10.3 GW) and distributed generation (8.3 GW), photovoltaic technology was responsible for 12.3 GW, or 66% of the total. |
