The country has seen a 113% increase in the number of registered electrified light vehicles. In September alone, 13,265 electrified light vehicles were sold. The number of charging stations has reached 10,622, compared to 4,300 in December 2023.
With 13,265 electrified light vehicles sold in September, 2024 is shaping up to be another year of significant evolution for electromobility in Brazil, with the concomitant growth of public electric charging infrastructure, which already surpassed the symbolic mark of 10,000 charging stations in August.
"Once again, the figures confirm our assessments: the increase in sales of electrified vehicles is driving a broad ecosystem of companies associated with electromobility in the main regions of the country," says Ricardo Bastos, president of the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE).
"The expansion of this ecosystem is generating jobs, income and investments, not only in the production of vehicles, but also in the manufacturing of equipment and components, parts, software and the provision of services," he added.
From January to September 2024, 122,548 electrified light vehicles were registered, which represents an increase of 113% compared to the same period in 2023 (57,510 vehicles).
Three months before the end of the year, the monthly average of electrified vehicle sales is 13,616, indicating that the annual total should exceed the projection of 150,000 units. As a result, the Brazilian electrified fleet should approach the 400,000-unit mark.
Plug-in vehicles recorded an increase of 56.83% compared to August 2023 (8,458 vehicles). The year 2024 has seen significant sales of electrified vehicles, especially plug-in vehicles, pure electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrids with external charging (PHEV).
Charging infrastructure
The increase in charging infrastructure has allowed electric vehicles (BEV and PHEV) to gain traction and increase their share in the Brazilian automotive market. In terms of electrified vehicles, electric vehicles accounted for 70% of sales in the period from January to September 2024 (86,326 vehicles). Plug-in vehicles increased by 56.83% compared to August 2023 (8,458 vehicles).
According to Tupi Mobilidade, the number of electrified stations in Brazil increased from 350 in December 2020 to 2,955 in December 2022, 4,300 in December 2023 and 10,622 in August 2024.
ABVE alone has 58 associated companies related to charging infrastructure, which act strongly in the electromobility production chain, generating jobs and bringing investments to the country.
In a recent survey conducted by the association for the 1st Yearbook of the Productive Chain, which will be released shortly, companies related to the infrastructure sector are the ones that presented the most investment plans for the next three years in the country.
Technologies
In September, 4,699 BEVs were sold, accounting for 35.4% of all electrified vehicles. Compared to August, registrations decreased by 8.1%. Compared to September 2023 (1,830 vehicles), there was a significant increase of 156.8%.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) totalled 4,869 units sold during the month, with a market share of 36.7%. Compared to August (5,781 vehicles), there was a decrease of 15.8%; compared to August 2023 (8,458 vehicles), there was an increase of 60.8%.
Conventional HEVs (non-plug-in petrol or diesel electric vehicles) accounted for 9.3% of sales (1,235 vehicles), FLEX HEVs 11.6% (1,540 vehicles) and micro-hybrids (MHEVs) 7.0% (922 vehicles).
In 2024 (January to September), the market share of electrified vehicles by technology is as follows:
BEV: 45,721 (37.31%)
PHEV: 40,605 (33.13%)
HEV: 10,929 (9.3%)
HEV FLEX: 15,838 (11.6%)
MHEV: 9,455 (7.0%)
Geography of electromobility
The Southeast region is the leader in sales of electric vehicles (BEV and PHEV). In terms of market growth, the regions that stand out the most are the North, Northeast and Midwest.
The capitals of these regions lead the sales of electric vehicles and contribute to making electromobility a widespread process and not just restricted to the Southeast.
The state of Maranhão, for example, is the one that has increased the charging infrastructure the most. In March, there were 40 points available, and in five months there has been an increase of 172.5%. Today, there are 109 points available in the state.
In terms of municipalities, the sales are still highlighted in the state capitals:
1st Sao Paulo: 1,764
2nd Brasilia: 986
3rd Rio de Janeiro: 619
4th Belo Horizonte: 410
5th Curitiba: 370 |
