JSW MG Motor India has partnered with Vision Mechatronics, a technology company specializing in second-life batteries, to repurpose used EV batteries for large-scale energy storage. The collaborations first project focuses on a 36-kilowatt uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup solution, which has been deployed at an industrial facility in Pune. This initiative demonstrates the potential of second-life EV batteries for industrial applications.
Under the partnership, JSW MG Motor will supply EV batteries that are no longer suitable for vehicles, while Vision Mechatronics will repurpose them into second-life energy storage systems. “The project shows that a batterys life doesnt end when the cars journey ends,” said Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at JSW MG Motor India. He highlighted the launch of a high-voltage second-life battery featuring an indigenous Battery Management System (BMS), calling it a future-ready innovation.
This initiative is expected to benefit small and medium-sized enterprises seeking affordable, sustainable energy storage solutions. Gupta also noted that this is the company’s third pilot project under ‘Project Revive,’ following previous collaborations with IIT Delhi and Batx, and the deployment of a 5kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in a Nainital school with Lohum and Teri.
Vision Mechatronics Managing Director Rashi Gupta added that the repurposed batteries could be used for a variety of applications, including UPS systems, diesel generator replacements, and backup power. For now, the focus is on UPS solutions, but broader applications are expected within six months. |
