Work Detail The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced updates to the standards and specifications for Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Water Pumping Systems under the PM KUSUM scheme. Initially issued in March 2023, these guidelines are being revised to incorporate innovations and technological advancements in the equipment. Stakeholders are invited to submit their suggestions for these updates by October 3, 2024. The updated standards focus on Solar Water Pumping Systems that utilize Positive Displacement technology. These systems are intended for use with clear, cold water and are typically installed in bore wells. The guidelines outline the technical specifications, performance criteria, and safety requirements necessary for effective and reliable operation. The primary goal of these systems is to harness solar energy for pumping water, thereby promoting sustainable practices in water management. The reference standards cited in the guidelines include various Indian Standards (IS) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards relevant to solar photovoltaic systems. The essential components of these pumping systems include a solar PV array, a motor pump set, and a controller. Notably, the controller features Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technology, which optimizes energy consumption to enhance overall system efficiency. These pump systems are designed to function effectively across a range of water depths and must fulfill specific output requirements based on dynamic head measurements. The daily water output is evaluated under standard conditions, taking into account factors such as solar radiation and the efficiency of the system. Safety measures are also integrated into the design to prevent issues like dry running, over-voltage, and reverse polarity. To ensure durability, components are made from corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel. For enhanced monitoring, these systems can be equipped with remote monitoring units that track real-time operational parameters, including water output and energy consumption. The guidelines stipulate that solar modules should meet certain efficiency standards, requiring a minimum efficiency of 19% and a warranty of up to 25 years to guarantee long-term performance. Moreover, the pump controllers, whether built-in or external, must comply with specific protection requirements to ensure safe operation under various conditions. The installation must include proper earthing and lightning protection to safeguard electrical components. The guidelines provide detailed specifications for the construction of the pump system, addressing materials, mounting structures, and cabling. The system is expected to withstand harsh environmental conditions, including high wind speeds, with galvanized structures ensuring stability. Testing for hydraulic and electrical performance is mandatory to confirm that the system meets the established standards. A warranty of 60 months on workmanship and materials is also mandated, along with performance guarantees based on solar intensity and geographical location. Each component of the system must be marked with the manufacturer’s technical specifications. In summary, these guidelines offer a thorough framework for the design, installation, and operation of solar PV water pumping systems. Their emphasis on reliability, safety, and durability makes them a sustainable solution for effective water management in regions rich in solar energy.
