Public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in India saw a significant rise in power consumption during the first quarter of FY25, more than doubling compared to the same period last year. According to data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), public charging stations consumed 176.87 million units (MU) of electricity between April and June 2024, reflecting a 108% year-on-year growth from the 84.95 MU consumed in Q1 FY24.
This surge is attributed to the rapid increase in EV registrations, which rose by over 42% year-on-year in FY24, with 16,81,127 units registered compared to 11,83,341 units in FY23. By July 2024, the total number of registered EVs in India stood at approximately 4.575 million. During Q1 FY25, more than 3.94 lakh electric passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and electric commercial vehicles were sold.
Delhi led the country in electricity consumption for public EV charging stations, using 83.86 MU, accounting for 47% of the total energy consumed. Maharashtra followed with 44.48 MU (25%), while Gujarat ranked third with 14.38 MU (8%).
In Q1 FY24, Delhi also led, consuming 38.114 MU (45%), followed by Maharashtra with 34.239 MU (40%), and Gujarat with 6.364 MU (7.5%).
The growth in power consumption aligns with the expansion of India’s EV infrastructure. A report by advisory firm Forvis Mazars in August 2024 highlighted that the number of public battery EV charging stations had grown nearly ninefold, from 1,800 in February 2022 to 16,347 by March 2024.
India is projected to have around 50 million EVs on its roads by 2030, with the market size expected to reach US$48.6 billion. To meet the rising demand, India will need to install over 400,000 charging stations annually, targeting 1.32 million chargers by 2030. The report also emphasized the unique nature of India’s charging infrastructure, where two-wheelers (2Ws) and three-wheelers (3Ws) dominate, relying on AC slow charging and battery swapping, while four-wheelers (4Ws) and buses require a mix of AC and DC charging solutions.
As India’s EV stock increases, especially in the 4W segment, the demand for public charging networks and DC fast chargers is expected to grow rapidly. |
