Chennai Metro Rail Limited has awarded a contract for the design, manufacturing, supply, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and operation of a self-propelled rail-grinding machine to US-based HARSCO RAIL LLC. The four-year contract is valued at ?53.02 crores, with the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) issued to the company on July 19, as per an official release.
The rail grinding machine is a specialized vehicle designed for the maintenance of railway tracks. Its primary function is to restore the rail profile by removing irregularities, such as mill scale and superficial defects that occur during operations. This maintenance is crucial for enhancing the geometric quality of the track, improving rail-wheel contact, and ensuring better ride quality. Additionally, it helps to reduce high dynamic loads, noise, and vibration experienced by metro trains.
According to the release, implementing preventive and curative grinding processes will extend the service life of the rails by approximately 25%. |
