Nucleoeléctrica Argentina, the company in charge of operating the countrys nuclear power plants, announced today that it has secured the necessary funds to carry out the life extension project for Atucha I, a strategic milestone for Argentinas nuclear development. The total cost of the renovation project amounts to US$670 million.
The announcement was made by the new president of the company, Alberto Lamagna, who confirmed that the maintenance shutdown of the plant will begin on September 29, the day on which its first operating cycle will end after 50 years of generating energy.
“The project will allow Atucha I to operate for 20 more years, ensuring its contribution to the national energy matrix and promoting the development of technical capabilities that will position Argentina in the global nuclear services market,” said Lamagna, who also highlighted the national government’s commitment to “strengthening and expanding Argentina’s nuclear potential, in a context of global revitalization of this type of energy, which offers development opportunities in the incorporation of private capital.”
Atucha I will have to undergo a life extension shutdown that will last 30 months.

Nuclear Power Plant
, like any industrial facility, has a design life that marks the period during which its components and equipment can operate safely and efficiently. Once this cycle is complete, a life extension shutdown must be performed, which will last 30 months and will allow for the maintenance tasks, inspections and improvements necessary for the plant to operate safely for a new cycle.
This entire process will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, the body dedicated to the regulation and supervision of this activity, which is responsible for issuing the license that enables Nucleoeléctrica Argentina to operate its facilities.
Information about Atucha I
The Atucha I Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear plant in Latin America, located in the city of Lima, province of Buenos Aires. Inaugurated in 1974, it has a PHWR (Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor) reactor and an installed capacity of 362 MW.
During its 50 years of operation, it has generated energy reliably, contributing significantly to the national electrical system. With the extension of its life, Atucha I will continue to play a key role in the contribution of nuclear energy to the generation of energy for millions of Argentines.
