The upcoming airport at Parandur, located 60 km west of Chennai, will feature a dedicated cargo village designed to meet the growing demands of trade. This facility will have direct connectivity to the planned multimodal logistics park at Mappedu, according to Sandeep Nanduri, Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).
Similarly, the new airport in Hosur will also include a cargo facility to support industries such as manufacturing, electric vehicles, and semiconductors. “We will ensure that the cargo requirements are met at both airports,” Nanduri stated during the SEAIRO Conference on Logistics, themed ‘Connecting Markets, Collaborative Strategies for Elevating Logistics to Global Standards,’ organized by CII on Thursday.
Nanduri emphasized that the strength and success of the state heavily depend on robust logistics infrastructure. The state is planning to invest ?20,000 crore to develop the greenfield airport at Parandur, which is expected to handle approximately 10 crore passengers annually. The airport will feature two runways, terminal buildings, taxiways, an apron, and a cargo terminal.
In comparison, Chennai Airport currently manages around 2.2 crore passengers each year, with modernization efforts expected to increase this capacity to 3.5 crore over the next seven years. The government also aims to build a greenfield international airport in Hosur, which will occupy nearly 2,000 acres and accommodate about 3 crore passengers annually.
Additionally, TIDCO has initiated a study to develop a high-speed rail corridor and a high-speed freight corridor in the state, in collaboration with the Railways. This study has assessed various routes, including Madurai-Thoothukudi, Chennai-Hosur, and Coimbatore-Thoothukudi.
To further streamline cargo movement, TIDCO is piloting the implementation of tracking and tracing infrastructure across the state.
Chennai Port Authority Chairman Sunil Paliwal highlighted the importance of collaboration in infrastructure projects, such as the RFID implementation at Chennai Port and the ongoing construction of new warehouses and paved yards to enhance efficiency.
Paliwal also noted that projects like the Northern Port Access Road and Elevated Corridor demonstrate how joint efforts among various agencies can improve infrastructure. “As we move forward with these initiatives, we remain committed to the holistic development of our ports, ensuring not only reduced logistics costs but also a positive contribution to the environment. These efforts will set benchmarks for sustainable logistics practices in the region,” he emphasized. |
