Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), a Navratna Defense Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU), has officially commenced production activities for its first Multipurpose Cargo Vessel (MPV) for Navi Merchants, Denmark. The ceremony took place today, with Mr. Simon Christensen, CEO of Navi Merchants, serving as the Chief Guest. He joined Mr. Sanjeev Singhal, Chairman and Managing Director of MDL, in cutting the first steel plate, alongside the Director (Shipbuilding), Chief Vigilance Officer of MDL, and other officials.
MDL has entered into a contract with Navi Merchants to design, build, and deliver a total of six vessels, with an option for four additional units. The project is valued at approximately $86.05 million (around ?700 crores). Each vessel will have a capacity of 7,500 DWT and will feature a hybrid propulsion system designed to meet stringent emission standards, classified under DNV (Det Norske Veritas).
These vessels will be constructed as Ice Class 1B, equipped with a single screw, controllable pitch medium-speed diesel engine, and will include Electrical Energy Storage systems to adhere to DNV Class notation Battery (Safety) for unrestricted global operations.
The versatile MPVs will be capable of transporting a diverse range of cargo, including dry bulk, project cargo, containers, steel products, general cargo (packaged, palletized, and bagged goods), forest products, and hazardous materials.
The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in April 2026, and todays plate cutting ceremony marks a significant milestone in the production activities for this ambitious project. |
