US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have lauded a groundbreaking agreement to set up an advanced semiconductor fabrication plant in Kolkata. The new facility will focus on manufacturing semiconductors for national security, next-generation telecommunications, and green energy applications, enhancing the resilience, security, and sustainability of global semiconductor supply chains.
The project, led by GlobalFoundries (GF), includes the creation of the GF Kolkata Power Center. This semiconductor plant, supported by the India Semiconductor Mission, will manufacture infrared, gallium nitride, and silicon carbide chips, crucial for technologies like AI, connected vehicles, and IoT devices.
The plant will also foster R&D advancements and generate high-quality jobs in both the US and India through strategic partnerships with companies like Bharat Semi and 3rdiTech, and collaboration with the US Space Force. Additionally, Biden and Modi highlighted ongoing US-India cooperation in AI, quantum computing, and 5G technology, further strengthening bilateral ties in critical tech sectors.
The two leaders also celebrated Ford Motor Companys plans to use its Chennai plant to manufacture vehicles for export, and IBMs MoU with the Indian government, aiming to enhance AI innovation and R&D in advanced processors. |
