Work Detail | GE’s Power Conversion Business has received a contract to provide two static frequency converters for the Lam Ta Khong pumped-storage plant in Thailand. The contract involves the supply of two 16.5-MW, water-cooled static frequency converters (SFC) to replace the original converters for the two 260-MW turbine-generator units, which were originally provided by GE in 1999. “Our partnership with GE goes back to 1999 when GE’s SFC solution was first deployed in the PSPP. After 17 years of operation, we have witnessed that the technology provided by GE is proven, reliable and meets our requirement at all ends,” said Mr. Pairoj, head, Division of Pumped Storage Investigation and Study project for project owner Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). “We look forward to continue to work with GE and believe that it would help us bring cleaner power to meet the growing energy demands of Thailand.” This work will help EGAT expand total generating capacity of this plant, according to a press release from GE. The government of Thailand has outlined an energy plan in which the country anticipates achieving more than 2 GW of newly added pumped-storage hydropower capacity by 2036, GE says. Lam Ta Khong (also called Lam Ta Khong Jolabha Vadhana) is on the Lam Ta Khong River between Sikhio district and Pak Chong district, in Nakhon Ratchasima province. In September 2014, EGAT awarded a US$64.3 million contract to Voith Hydro to supply eletromechanical equipment for the expansion of this facility. “The expansion will more than double Lam Ta Khong's current output capacity and marks Voith Hydro's first work on a pumped-storage facility in southeast Asia,” the story said. When complete, total capacity of the pumped storage plant will be 1,000 MW, 500 MW from two units installed in Phase 1 and 500 MW from two units installed in Phase 2. The expansion is expected to be complete in 2018. |
