Hindalco’s copper division has announced plans to invest ?2,450 crore in two major copper projects in Gujarat, including the establishment of an e-waste recycling facility at Dahej. The facility will produce 200 kilotonnes of copper annually, marking a significant step toward advancing Indias recycling capabilities.
Speaking at the 4th Global RE-Invest summit in Gandhinagar, Rohit Pathak, CEO of Hindalcos Copper Business, stated, “We are beginning construction on India’s first copper and e-waste recycling plant at Dahej. In Phase 1, we aim to recover around 50 kilotonnes of copper, with the overall project targeting 200 kilotonnes. The plant will process 300-350 kilotonnes of scrap and e-waste annually.”
The first phase of the project involves a ?2,000 crore investment, with plans to scale the investment fourfold in the coming years. The recycling plant will also produce precious metals such as silver and gold, significantly reducing the companys reliance on imported copper concentrates. Currently, Hindalco imports about 1.3 million tonnes of copper concentrates for its smelter plant in Dahej.
In addition to the recycling plant, Pathak highlighted Hindalco’s plans to expand its copper smelting capacity in Dahej, already one of the largest copper smelting complexes globally. The company will add 250-280 kilotonnes of capacity to meet India’s growing demand for copper, increasing production by 50-60%.
Hindalco is also setting up a ?450 crore copper tube manufacturing unit in Vadodara, which will produce copper tubes used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The Waghodia plant, with an initial capacity of 25,000 tonnes, will be expanded to 75,000 tonnes, requiring an additional ?1,500 crore investment.
To support India’s high-speed rail ambitions, Hindalco has started producing special copper-silver and copper-magnesium alloys, which are essential for high-tensile strength and better conductivity in railway systems.
This extensive investment in copper production and recycling reflects Hindalco’s commitment to bolstering India’s infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities, while also promoting sustainable practices through advanced e-waste recycling. |
