Work Detail Tamil Nadu has become the second-largest state in solar power generation in India, trailing only behind Rajasthan. The states utility, Tangedco (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd), set a new solar generation record on Monday, producing 45.90 million units of solar power, surpassing its previous peak of 45.47 million units recorded on September 12, 2024. According to data from the Central Electricity Authority, Tamil Nadu generated 521.73 million units of solar power in the first 12 days of September, securing the second spot in solar generation for this period. Rajasthan led the chart with 1,541.70 million units of solar power produced. Notably, Tamil Nadus solar generation has outpaced that of Gujarat, which has a significantly higher installed solar capacity. As of August 31, 2024, Gujarats installed solar power capacity stood at 14,784 MW, compared to Tamil Nadus 8,993 MW. Rajasthan remains the leader in installed solar capacity with 24,102 MW, while Tamil Nadu ranks third. Beyond solar power, Tamil Nadu continues to lead in overall renewable energy generation. In the first 12 days of September, the state generated 1,974.56 million units of renewable energy, including wind, solar, biomass, bagasse, and small hydro. Rajasthan followed with 1,684.98 million units, Karnataka generated 1,292.11 million units, and Gujarat produced 1,059.93 million units. Tamil Nadu remains the leader in wind energy generation, producing 1,453 million units (MU) in the first 12 days of September. The states installed wind power capacity stood at 10,930 MW as of August 31, 2024. However, Gujarat now leads in installed wind capacity, with 12,163 MW and 586 MU generated during the same period. Gujarats rise to the top in wind power capacity came after overtaking Tamil Nadu last year, driven by policy support, infrastructure availability, and a strong financial position of its DISCOM.
