The Indonesian government is intensifying efforts towards achieving its energy transition goals, focusing on reducing reliance on fossil fuels and accelerating the adoption of renewable energy. Expert Staff of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources for Natural Resource Economics, Lana Saria, highlighted the importance of public support and collaboration during the Thematic Forum of the Public Relations Coordinating Agency (Bakohumas). The event, themed “Cirata Mendunia: Building a Global Reputation to Pursue Net Zero Emission Targets,” emphasized Indonesia’s progress toward realizing its Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060. Lana pointed out Indonesia’s vast renewable energy potential, particularly in hydropower, with over 89.37 GW available across 293 locations. The Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS), the largest in Southeast Asia and the third-largest globally, serves as a key example. Spanning 200 hectares and with a capacity of 145 MW Ac (192 MWp), the Cirata PLTS is a symbol of Indonesia’s clean energy future. Beyond hydropower, the government is collaborating with international entities, such as the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) and the Indonesia China Energy Forum (ICEF), to advance its energy transition goals. By 2060, the government plans to develop 367 GW of renewable energy, including 115 GW from solar power. A survey by the Independent Research Institute Network (IRIS) in 2023 found that while 93% of Indonesians are concerned about climate change, 82% believe it can still be mitigated. Hasyim Gautama, Director of Governance and Partnership at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, stressed the role of public relations in communicating the NZE narrative and rallying public support. The forum also included a visit to the Cirata Floating PLTS, allowing participants to witness firsthand the progress being made in Indonesia’s energy transition. |
