In the Dar Saad district of Aden Governorate, power outages had long disrupted the education of over 7,000 students and teachers, leaving classrooms in the dark and stifling heat. Students struggled to focus, with some fainting due to the unbearable conditions. Recognizing the need for a sustainable solution, local authorities, with the support of the Strengthening Institutional and Economic Resilience in Yemen (SIERY) Project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the UNDP in partnership with Yemen Aid, installed solar energy systems across eight schools and the Ministry of Education office. With a total capacity of 93,000 watts, the solar installations transformed these schools. Classrooms once plagued by darkness and heat were now bright, cool, and conducive to learning. New fans, electrical systems, and solar panels created a welcoming environment, significantly improving the concentration and engagement of students and teachers alike. “The difference is remarkable,” said one student. “We feel comfortable now, and drop-out rates have decreased.” Ms. Hanaa, the principal of Zainab School, called the project a dream come true for her school. This initiative not only improved current conditions but also laid the foundation for lasting educational progress in Dar Saad. The local authorities’ efforts, backed by international support, showcase how collaboration can overcome even the toughest challenges. |
