Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has proudly announced that Al Rayan Masjid in Hatta has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first mosque in the world to receive the prestigious LEED ZERO certification. This achievement underscores Dubai’s dedication to sustainability and innovation in architectural design.
The mosque’s success aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and supports the sustainable development goals for Hatta. “We are immensely proud of Al Rayan Masjid’s achievement as a LEED ZERO building,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. “This milestone demonstrates that our religious and community spaces can be designed and operated in harmony with the environment, supporting our Net-Zero by 2050 target.”
Al Rayan Masjid has set a new benchmark in sustainable development by generating 150% of its annual energy needs through high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on its parking structure and ablution area. The mosque not only meets its total energy consumption but also contributes surplus power back to the grid, embodying the principles of net positive energy.
Previously recognized as the world’s first mosque to achieve the LEED v4 Platinum certification in 2021, Al Rayan Masjid has now furthered its leadership in sustainable architecture by earning the LEED ZERO Energy certification. This accomplishment reinforces Dubai’s vision of becoming a global leader in clean energy and green economy.
Spanning 1,050 square meters and accommodating over 600 worshippers, Al Rayan Masjid includes a 25-meter-high minaret, dedicated parking, facilities for People of Determination, and a Green Charger station for electric vehicles. The mosque features solar photovoltaic panels, a water treatment unit for irrigation and cleaning, and a highly efficient air purification system to maintain a healthy indoor environment, all while using recycled materials for construction.
DEWA remains committed to implementing innovative solutions that enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon footprints, and improve the quality of life across the Emirate. Al Rayan Masjid stands as a shining example of how religious and community spaces can lead the way in sustainable development. |
