The Albanese and Miles Labor Governments are taking action in Queensland, rolling out energy performance upgrades for thousands of social housing tenants to reduce energy bills and ease the cost of living.
A $116 million joint investment will provide upgrades such as thermal shell improvements, air cooling solutions, ceiling fans, solar PV systems, energy-efficient hot water systems, and fixed appliance upgrades.
The Albanese Government continues to deliver on its Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative, while the Miles Government progresses its Homes for Queenslanders plan to build one million homes, including 53,500 social homes.
In total, approximately 28,000 public housing and 4,000 community housing dwellings will benefit, supporting Queensland’s clean energy transformation and easing cost-of-living pressures for the state’s most vulnerable.
This partnership complements existing energy bill relief efforts and contrasts sharply with the Liberal-National plan for $100 billion in federal cuts, including slashing $10 billion from the Housing Australia Future Fund and $5.5 billion from the Help to Buy scheme. These cuts jeopardize 30,000 affordable homes and homeownership opportunities for 8,000 Queenslanders.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, said,“The Albanese Government is driving down energy bills with social housing upgrades to help bring cost of living relief to some 32,000 Queensland homes. Working with the Miles Government to deliver better energy performance in social housing means warmer homes in winter, cooler homes in summer and cheaper bills year-round.” |
