Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL) and Nissin Electric Co have partnered to launch India’s first micro substation demonstration project, aimed at providing stable electricity to remote areas without a power grid. The project, part of Japans Energy Efficiency Technologies initiative, is backed by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and is set to run until FY25.
Tata Power-DDL and Nissin Electric signed a Project Agreement on August 21, 2024, marking the official start. The substation, located on the outskirts of Delhi, will be operational by March 2025. This will be the first installation in India to use a Power Voltage Transformer (PVT) in a micro substation, allowing direct conversion of high-voltage power from transmission lines to low-voltage power for residential use.
Tata Power-DDL CEO Gajanan S Kale stated, "This project aligns with our commitment to sustainable, reliable power supply and has the potential to address power challenges in remote areas of India."
The micro substation will feature a 100 kVA installation that steps down 66 kilovolts to 240 volts in a compact 40 sq meter space. It will provide a cost-effective solution for remote areas, reducing the need for large infrastructure while maintaining reliable power supply, even in challenging terrains.
Nissin Electric Managing Director Kenji Kobayashi highlighted the projects alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of clean energy and infrastructure. The technology will also support disaster recovery and be expanded to other regions in India and internationally.
This initiative builds on a letter of intent signed by NEDO and Power Finance Corporation earlier this year, with plans to test and expand the technology in similar regions |
