Work Detail The Mumbai Coastal Road project is set to see a significant milestone this month with the opening of one arm of the arch bridge connecting to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The tentative opening date is September 15, as reported by civic sources. The newly opened south-bound carriageway will initially allow traffic only in the northbound direction, from Marine Drive towards Bandra. The specific traffic arrangements will be finalized by the traffic police in consultation with the BMC. Recent asphalting work was completed last weekend, with the final 180 meters finished on Sunday, taking advantage of the relatively dry weather. BMC Chief Bhushan Gagrani confirmed that while one arm of the bridge will be operational this month, the construction of the other arm is expected to continue until the end of the year. The completion of two remaining spans is still pending. Additionally, BMC plans to open the accompanying promenade from Breach Candy to Worli, which will feature a dedicated cycling track, by the years end. The bridges two arch spans, measuring 136 meters on the right-hand side and 144 meters on the left-hand side, weigh a combined 4,000 metric tonnes. Additional spans of 44 meters, 60 meters, and 46 meters bring the total steel requirement to 7,000 metric tonnes. Steel for the project was supplied by Jindal Steel and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India. The left-hand side span is larger due to a slight curvature, and the bridges are being coated with a five-level paint system to prevent corrosion from the coastal environment. In response to a viral social media post highlighting the differing levels of the bridge spans, BMC explained that the northbound carriageway is elevated to align with the curvature of the approach road from J K Kapur Chowk.
