The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) MIMAROPA officially launched two new Shared Service Facilities (SSF) in Busuanga, Palawan. The initiative includes the SSF for the Bogtong Fish Processor Association (BFPA) and the turnover of the Common Service Facilities for the Bambuhay Handicrafts Association, aiming to enhance fish processing and bamboo handicraft production, respectively.
The projects align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG No. 5 on Gender Equality, SDG No. 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG No. 7 on Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG No. 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.
The event, held at Barangay Bogtong in Busuanga, was attended by key figures, including DTI Regional Operations Group Assistant Secretary Grace Baluyan, DTI MIMAROPA Regional Director Rodolfo Mariposque, Busuanga Municipal Mayor Elizabeth Cervantes, TESDA MIMAROPA Regional Director Angelina Carreon, and representatives from the USAID Fish Right Program.
The BFPA’s fish processing facility is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, including a blast freezer, vacuum packaging machines, chest freezers for storage, a water treatment system, a mini-ice plant, a shipper box with phase change material panels, stainless steel working tables, digital weighing scales with barcode printers, a bone saw, food metal detector, and a solar power system. Notably, this facility is the first SSF project in the Philippines to utilize renewable energy, highlighting a commitment to sustainable practices.
In addition, the Bambuhay Handicrafts Association has received a bamboo engraving machine to upgrade its common service facility. This equipment will help the Tagbanua women weavers enhance their production of bamboo-based products such as bags, straws, lampshades, mats, and lanterns. The initiative supports local artisans in improving product quality and expanding their market reach.
The launch of these facilities represents a significant step towards sustainable economic development in Palawan, promoting local industries while adhering to global sustainability standards. |
