Work Detail Infrastructure Ontario and Stevenson Memorial Hospital have issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for teams to deliver the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Redevelopment Project in Alliston, Ont. The RFQ is the first step in the process to select a team to help deliver the project. Submissions will be reviewed to shortlist teams with the required construction experience, as well as the financial capacity to deliver a project of this size and complexity. Shortlisted teams will then be invited to respond to a Request for Proposals (RFP), which is expected to be published in early 2025. The Stevenson Memorial Hospital Redevelopment Project is being delivered using a Design-Bid-Build model. The architect and engineers of record, under contract to Stevenson Memorial Hospital, are completing the design documents. This RFQ is to select a contractor to deliver the project based on these designs. The redevelopment project is being undertaken to redevelop, revitalize, and expand the hospital. At approximately 146,200 square-feet, the newly designed wrap-around expansion of the hospital will include a replacement and expansion of the existing hospital’s acute care areas and associated support functions. The redesign of the hospital will feature significant use of natural light, modern features, enhanced parking, and new, refreshed gardens and green spaces. A new, elevated helipad will also be a part of the project. As part of the new redevelopment, the hospital’s clinical areas will include: Emergency Department Laboratory Medical/Surgical (inpatient) Diagnostic Imaging Surgical Suite Birthing Unit/Obstetrics Pharmacy Medical Device Reprocessing Environmental Services Materials Management In January, 2023 SMH announced that the contract to design Phase I of the redevelopment project was awarded to Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning. Stevenson Memorial Hospital opened its doors for the first time on June 30, 1928. What exists today is its second hospital structure, built in 1964. Stevenson has grown from a small, rural hospital due to the significant growth in the community. The facility’s infrastructure requires an expansion to meet the growing needs of the community it serves. The Town of New Tecumseth is the seventh fastest growing municipality in Canada as per the 2021 Census, experiencing 28 per cent growth in population since 2016. The ongoing and rapid growth of the region is predicted to continue, and this redevelopment project is needed to ensure that Stevenson Memorial Hospital has the infrastructure necessary to meet the increasing demand. The original 1964 design was intended to manage 7,000 visits per year, but they have seen up to almost 40,000 visits annually, with the increase in visits being driven by the increase in population and aging of the surrounding community. The redevelopment project will allow Stevenson Memorial Hospital to increase inpatient bed capacity by 20 percent and will triple the square footage of the existing hospital. Examples of improved patient comfort in the new addition include a reduction in crowding, improved care environment for birthing mothers, improved patient privacy and confidentiality, and improved flexibility in managing inpatients (with 100 percent private inpatient rooms), among others.
