The UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) will procure and deliver solar kits, hybrid inverters, and thousands of solar streetlights to upgrade healthcare centres in Cote dlvoire.
"The solar equipment will help power the lights and equipment necessary for medical professionals to do their jobs, increasing access to health services for people living in rural areas/ commented Jakob Tuborgh, Director a.i. of the UNOPS Multi-Country Office in Senegal.
Leveraging funding of $16 million from the World Bank, UNOPS will procure and deliver more than 300 solar kits, more than 300 hybrid inverters and more than 3,300 solar streetlights.
Supplying solar to 160 healthcare facilities in Cote dlvoire
Unfortunately, the standard of healthcare on the Cote dlvoire is considered subpar. With 28 million people in the country living below the national poverty line - the equivalent of 40% of the countrys population - many cannot afford health insurance or private care.
Therefore, people living in rural areas of Cote dlvoire depend on health centres to meet their healthcare needs. Given that these facilities need a constant and reliable supply of electricity to operate efficiently, the installation of solar kits is a positive addition.
In support of the Ministry of Healths priorities of providing equitable healthcare access, UNOPS is procuring solar equipment that will provide a renewable source of electricity to more than 160 health centres in rural areas of the country - areas not covered by the loca electricity distribution network.
Cote dlvoire also hopes to increase its energy capacity by 1,000MW by 2025 with the ambition of doing so on the back of its energy potential. This project will therefore help the country meet its healthcare needs while increasing its renewable energy capacity. |
