Work Detail ABB has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 10 gigawatts (GW) in delivering automation solutions for renewable energy plants across India. This achievement marks a major advancement for the company, which began with a 100-megawatt (MW) project seven years ago. Since then, ABB has strengthened its presence in the renewable energy sector through over 300 projects utilizing its IoT-based PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) solution. The PLC-based SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system provided by ABB offers a comprehensive automation control solution, enabling real-time data analysis to optimize plant performance and minimize maintenance. This system allows operators to monitor and analyze key parameters effectively, ensuring complete visibility of plant operations. Integrated into ABB’s Drive Products offering, the SCADA solution reduces investment costs and operational risks for utility-scale renewable energy plants. As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity to meet growing energy demands and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the country is working towards its target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. India aims to reach 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. Renewable energy plants in India are projected to cut carbon emissions by over 24 million tons annually on average, with ABB’s solutions playing a pivotal role in this transition. AR Madhusudan, President of Drive Products at ABB India, commented, “We are proud to support India’s push towards a clean energy transition. Our technology is essential for optimizing the capture of renewable energy and ensuring the efficient operation of hybrid plants, including solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).” ABB’s SCADA system, driven by its robust AC500 PLC, supports complex safety calculations necessary for supervising variables such as temperature and pressure in renewable energy applications. The system ensures compliance with Indian grid code guidelines and provides customized reporting and analytics tailored to the needs of diverse renewable energy plants. As of July 31, 2024, India’s solar power capacity stands at approximately 87 GW, while wind power capacity reaches about 47 GW, according to the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. ABB has established a strong presence in the solar sector and continues to partner with major EPC firms to advance renewable energy projects across the country.
