Work Detail The metro rail project for the city, which has been approved by the state government, is waiting for the approval of the Central government. Principal secretary housing Sadakant instructed the officials to display the picture of metro rail at public places to apprise the masses of proposed project.
Sadakant, who held a meeting with officials of Varanasi Development Authority on Monday, said that the detailed project report (DPR) of metro rail was prepared by Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), a government of India enterprise. The work on project will start immediately after the nod from the Centre, he said adding that the DPR has already been forwarded to the Central government for approval.
According to the DPR, there are two corridors in the 29.23 km-long metro route. One corridor from BHEL to Banaras Hindu University is 19.35 km long, while another corridor from Benia Bagh to Sarnath is 9.885 km long. The metro system will have 26 stations, including 20 underground and six elevated in both corridors. The 23.467 km stretch of metro will be elevated, while 5.768 km will be underground. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 13,133 crore.
The Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC), in coordination with RITES, had finalised the DPR of Varanasi Metro in February this year and it was approved by the state cabinet in May.
The preparation for the project was started in May 2015 when VDA and RITES signed a memorandum of agreement to carry out the assignment. The Housing and Urban Planning Department of state government had nominated RITES for the preparation of DPR for rail based mass transit system in Varanasi.
The VDA was nominated as nodal agency and the LMRC was nominated as coordinating agency for project study. The final draft report was submitted in January 2016 for finalisation of DPR. The final DPR incorporating the suggestions from stakeholders was submitted in February.
