Honourable Herbert Krapa, the Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, inaugurated Africa’s largest rooftop solar project. The initiative, spearheaded by Helios Solar Company—an LMI Holdings subsidiary— is situated in the Tema Free Zone Enclave and will provide 16.82 megawatts of power to Enclave Power Company, also a subsidiary of LMI Holdings. This landmark achievement highlights Helios Solar’s role in advancing Ghana’s industrialization efforts and marks a significant milestone for the country’s renewable energy sector.
The project is financed through a $30 million facility from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), aimed at promoting clean energy and water solutions. This funding is designed to support job creation and foster sustainable industrial development. The solar installation is projected to reduce Ghana’s carbon emissions by approximately 13,000 tons of CO2 equivalent annually.
Spanning 95,754 square meters at the International Warehousing Company Mega Warehouse, the solar plant features 29,262 N-type technology panels. It has created 128 jobs for Ghanaian nationals, underscoring its contribution to local employment.
The plant is expected to generate 24,750 MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power 55,000 homes, demonstrating its substantial capacity. The project was executed by Ghanaian firms Dutch and Co. (D&C) and Blossom Enbel Ventures (BEVL), serving as Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors, ensuring the installation met international standards and advanced Ghana’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The commissioning event on July 25th, 2024, marks a new chapter in Ghana’s energy sector, with the project poised to impact the nation’s environmental and economic landscape positively.
Additionally, the $30 million IFC loan is part of a larger $50 million investment to develop a solar farm and a water treatment plant. The solar plant will power businesses in the Tema Free Zones Enclave, while the Dawa Water Treatment Plant, a key phase of a larger 45,000 cubic meters per day water supply system, will serve Dawa City Development. This water system will utilize resources from the lower Volta River and include a high-pressure raw water pipeline and a treated water pipeline to the Dawa Industrial Zone. |
