An eight-storey, 45,000-sq-m hospital building has been completed at Canberra Hospital, the first in Australia to run fully on electrical power.
Built by Australian developer Multiplex, the Critical Services Building is an emergency, surgical and critical healthcare building containing a new emergency department, 22 operating theatres, a coronary care unit, laboratories and inpatient accommodation.
It uses 21 large heat pumps instead of gas boilers to generate hot water.
Façade solar shading, double glazing, ventilation and water recycling systems have been designed to reduce the cooling required in summer and heating in winter.
Green features used during construction included the use of electrified cranes, locally sourced concrete mix, and the repurposing of materials from previous demolition.
