Work Detail The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited is set to enhance the reliability of power supply to the Central and Northern regions following a significant funding commitment from the European Union (EU). On July 29, 2024, EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach, signed an agreement with Malawi’s Minister of Finance, Simplex Chithyola Banda, to provide K174 billion (€85 million) for the Eastern Backbone Transmission Line project. This funding aligns with the objectives of Malawi 2063 and the EU Global Gateway strategy. The project involves constructing a new 132 kV line on steel-latticed towers, replacing the deteriorating 42-year-old wooden pole-mounted lines. This upgrade will benefit domestic and agro-based industries, mining projects, and rural growth centers by increasing electricity reliability and reducing transmission losses. It will also contribute to environmental and climate resilience. The EU’s financial commitment includes a €55 million concessional loan from the European Investment Bank and a €30 million grant from the European Union. The Africa Development Bank will also invest in this critical infrastructure project. ESCOM Board Chairperson Morgan Tembo and Chief Executive Officer Kamkwamba Kumwenda were present at the signing ceremony in Lilongwe. The project encompasses the rehabilitation of 52 kilometers of 132kV power transmission lines, replacing wooden poles with steel-latticed towers along the Nkhoma-Nanjoka-Nkhotakota to Chintheche route in Nkhata Bay, and the Nkhotakota-Chinyama-Kanyika line. Additionally, the Nanjoka Substation will undergo significant upgrades. Once completed, this transmission line will enable Malawi to import power from Tanzania and address local transmission issues in the Central and Northern regions. The current line, built in 1981, requires frequent maintenance due to its vulnerability to termite damage and adverse weather conditions. In November 2022, Swedfund International provided ESCOM with $745,000 (approximately K759 million) to engage a consultant for an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the project. This preparatory step ensures the project’s alignment with environmental and social standards. The Eastern Backbone Transmission Line project represents a significant step towards a more reliable and sustainable power infrastructure for Malawi.
