Work Detail Dutch floater expert SBM Offshore has signed a contract with Woodside’s Mexican arm a contract for the provision of a floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit for the Trion deepwater oil field development. Under the deal, SBM Offshore will construct and then lease to Woodside an FSO unit for 20 years. This award complements the previously awarded transportation and installation contract for the FSO and the FPU awarded to SBM Offshore in 2023. The newbuild FSO, based on a suezmax-type hull, will be equipped with a disconnectable turret mooring system and will be moored in a water depth of about 2,500 meters and will be able to store around 950,000 barrels of crude oil. Some other companies that will be involved in the Trion project include major players such as TechnipFMC, Wood, and COSCO Shipping & Guangzhou Salvage Heavy Transport. The $7.2bn Trion project is in the Perdido basin in the Gulf of Mexico some 30 kilometres off the Mexico-US maritime border. First oil is set for 2028 and the development is targeting an estimated 479 mmboe of best estimate (2C) contingent oil and gas resources. Trion will include the installation of an FPU, an FSO, and 18 wells – nine producers, seven water injectors, and two gas injectors – drilled in the initial phase. A total of 24 wells will be drilled over the project’s life. Pemex discovered Trion in 2012 and currently owns 40% of the project. Woodside holds the remaining 60% which it bought through the acquisition of BHP Petroleum in 2022.
