Work Detail With 15,312 registrations, July is the best month of the year for sales of electrified light vehicles, with plug-in hybrids achieving the highest market share of the month. The total number of electrified vehicles in circulation in the country reaches 315,000. With 15,312 license plates registered, Brazil’s sales of electrified light vehicles in July were the best of 2024 so far, bringing the year-to-date total just seven months above 2023’s sales total. From January to July, the domestic market registered 94,616 electrified light vehicles, surpassing the 93,927 from January to December 2023, which had already been the best year in the history of electromobility in Brazil. With these figures, the Brazilian market also surpassed the symbolic mark of 300,000 electric and mild hybrid vehicles in circulation in the country, of different electrification technologies, since the beginning of the historical series of the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE). In July, this total reached 315,047, of which at least 152,493 are plug-in vehicles with external charging (BEV and PHEV). The rest are flexifuel HEVs, gasoline HEVs and MHEVs (hybrids without external charging). With 15,312 vehicles, July was also the best month for electrified vehicle sales in 2024 and the second in the historical series, only surpassed by December (16,279). Compared to June 2024 (14,396), the increase in July was 6.4% and compared to July 2023 (7,462 vehicles), an excellent 105%. As for total domestic sales of light vehicles (passenger cars + light commercial vehicles), which amounted to 227,300 units in July, according to Fenabrave, the market share of electrified vehicles remained at the level of 7% of recent months. The July figures reinforce ABVEs forecast that the year will end with total sales of more than 150,000 electrified light vehicles. “Brazilians interest in electric vehicles is growing and irreversible,” says ABVE President Ricardo Bastos. “Consumers are becoming more familiar with new technologies and are more aware of the environmental benefits and economic advantages that these vehicles provide,” he adds. Models The growing range of electrified models has also contributed to market growth. Between January and July, Brazil registered 301 electrified light models, representing an increase of 21% compared to 2023 (248). Plug-in vehicles accounted for 66% of these models (198), of which 62% were BEVs (122) and 38% PHEVs (76). The remaining 34% are hybrids without external charging (HEV, HEV Flex and MHEV). The model segment with the most registrations is SUVs. This market trend was present in 2023 and will continue in 2024. Technologies Plug-in vehicles, which include 100% battery-powered vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV), will continue to lead the market in 2024, with a 70% share of all electrified vehicles. The remaining 30% is shared between conventional hybrids (HEV+HEV Flex + MHEV). In July, the Brazilian market registered 6,659 PHEVs, with a share of 43.5% of the total electrified vehicles. Compared to June (5,047), there was an increase of 32%. Compared to July 2023 (2,597), the increase was 156%. 100% electric BEVs accounted for 30.7% of electrified vehicle registrations in July (4,703). Compared to June (5,190), this segment was down 9%. Compared to July 2023 (950), there was an extraordinary increase of 395%. Conventional HEVs (non-plug-in petrol or diesel electric) accounted for 6.4% of all electrified vehicles in July (977). Flex HEVs accounted for 11.1% (1,707) and micro-hybrid MHEVs accounted for 8.3% (1,266). From January to July 2024, the market share of electrified technologies is as follows: BEV: 35.907 (38%) PHEV: 29.955 (31,7%) HEV: 8.371 (8,8%) HEV Flex: 12.694 (13,4%) MHEV: 7.689 (8,1%) Charging The charging infrastructure is also a key point to boost this growth of the electric vehicle market, especially plug-in vehicles (BEV + PHEV). According to an estimate by Tupi Mobilidade, a company of ABVEs Infrastructure Group, in July there were 8,800 public and semi-public charging stations available in Brazil. The year 2024 is marked by the expansion of the charging infrastructure in the country. Companies such as Raízen Power and Vibra are participating in this movement, through partnerships with startups (such as Tupi Mobilidade, EZVolt and others) and also with car manufacturers (BYD).
