Tata Steel and Welspun Corp have successfully developed API X65 grade pipes designed for the transportation of pure gaseous hydrogen under high pressure (100 bar), with testing conducted at RINA in Italy. This marks a significant milestone, as Tata Steel becomes the first Indian steel mill to produce hot-rolled steel for hydrogen transportation, while Welspun Corp is the first Indian pipe mill to produce Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) pipes for this purpose.
The development is part of a Green Energy Strategic Partnership between Tata Steel and Welspun Corp, aimed at evaluating various pipe types for hydrogen transport. This initiative aligns with the Indian governments green hydrogen policy.
Prabhat Kumar, Vice President of Marketing & Sales (Flat Products) at Tata Steel, highlighted that this achievement lays the foundation for a more robust infrastructure to support the widespread adoption of green hydrogen, contributing to a more sustainable future.
Vipul Mathur, Managing Director of Welspun Corp, noted that the partnership with Tata Steel has been instrumental in promoting the use of green hydrogen in everyday applications.
In 2022, Tata Steel and Welspun Corp signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop API grade pipes compatible with hydrogen through the ERW pipe route. By October 2022, Welspun Corps Longitudinal-seam Submerged Arc Welding (LSAW) pipes successfully passed all qualification tests, confirming their suitability for hydrogen transportation. |
