Work Detail The fifth phase of the Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP) in Kenya to connect homes to electricity, has received a KSh 1,85 billion (around $14 million) grant from the Japanese International Co-operation Agency (JICA). The funding will allow Kenya Power to connect 9,121 households across four counties -Nakuru, Kwale, Kilifi and Nyandarua. The plan is to connect these homes by January 2025. The JICA grant comes two months after Kenya Power signed 26 contracts for the implementation of Phase 4 of the LMCP. This part of the project will cost KSh 27bn (around $207m) and is funded by the French Development Agency, the EL) and the European Investment Bank. It will connect 280,000 new customers to the national grid by November 2025. Progress of the LMCP Under the first three phases of the LMCP, 746,867 households have been connected to the grid at a cost of KSh 51.1bn (around $393m) So far KSh 73.1bn (around $562m) has been spent on the LMCP as part of the Kenya National Electrification Strategy developed in 2015. Its main objective is to speed up access for households and business across the country. Kenya Power is the projects implementing agent. The LMCP has helped Kenya increase its access rate to 76%, which currently stands at 9.6 million households connected to the grid. "This success is primarily hinged on maximising the efficiency of existing distribution transformers by connecting every household within 600 metres of the transformer as well as the installation of new transformers to serve households outside the radius," said Kenya Power.
