Techo Airport in Phnom Penh will become the ninth-largest airport in the world once it becomes fully operational by early 2025. The airport project is a huge undertaking for Cambodia and will be significant to the country’s economic growth.
Overview of the Techo Airport
The Techo International Airport was first announced in 2018 and will replace the existing Phnom Penh International Airport once operational. The old International Airport will be used for local flights and will also double as a military base.
The Techo airport site location is in Kandal Province, 40 kilometers away from the city center of Phnom Penh. The airport will be built on farmland and a reclaimed lake. This strategic location of the airport will make future expansion plans possible.
The airport will feature a sustainable design with natural lighting and abundant greeneries that will enhance Techo International Airport’s overall aesthetic design. The site will also feature a photovoltaic farm that will provide the airport terminal’s energy needs.
Techo Airport in Phnom Penh: Ninth Largest Airport in the world
The Techo International Airport will cover an area of 2,600 hectares, out of which 700 hectares will house infrastructures. The airport’s passenger terminal will span an area of 240,000 meters squared, initially accommodating 13 to 15 million passengers. The airport passenger terminal will eventually house 30 and 50 million passengers by 2030 and 2050 respectively.
The airport will have 22 gates and accommodate a capacity of 40 mid-sized planes. The Techo airport will also feature three parallel runways and an air traffic control tower.
The Techo International Airport is classified as 4F, the highest level for airports.

A Chinese corporation, The China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group, is providing its services for the construction of the Techo International Airport. Aside from them, Shanghai Baoye Group, another China-based company, is in charge of the taxiway, apron, runway, and other infrastructures. A subsidiary of the state-owned China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) Ltd. is also involved in the construction of Techo International Airport.
Meanwhile, a South Korea-based company, Heerim Architects & Planners, will provide project management and consultant services.
Foster + Partners, a firm based in the UK, designed the airport as one of the greenest airports in the world.
International Airport Set to Open Operations as early as Q1 2025
Currently, the Techo airport in Phnom Penh is expected to complete construction by October 2024 and is expected to start operations officially by the second quarter of 2025.
According to a report by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, the Techo International Airport’s first phase is 66% completed as of February 2024. Additionally, the passenger terminal is 59% complete, and the power supply center at 77% complete. Meanwhile, the air traffic control (ATC) tower is fully constructed at 100%.
