Work Detail | The City Council took another necessary procedural step Tuesday night as the date moves closer to start of construction of the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel downtown. The council approved conveying a small parcel of land to G8 Development, San Diego, the hotel developer. It is a plaza that provides pedestrian access between North Federal Avenue and the parking lots on the west side of City Hall where the hotel is to be built. G8 Development owner Philip Chodur is to begin construction of the hotel by Oct. 31 or the council can end the contract with him and seek other options. City Administrator Brent Trout said he is in touch with Chodur weekly and is confident the hotel will be built on schedule. Construction was originally intended to start in July but Chodur requested and received a three-month extension. Alliant Energy is in the process of moving some utilities in the parking lot in advance of the construction. In other business Tuesday, the council approved measures regarding the buyout of flood-damaged properties on 22nd Street Southeast, marking the end of the buyout process that started eight years ago when nearly 200 homes were heavily damaged by flooding. The council also approved several appointments, including that of Councilman Travis Hickey as mayor pro tem, succeeding Alex Kuhn who died in July. |
