Sturzenegger said that the governors have to reactivate public works and not Milei
The new minister sent a dart to the Buenos Aires native Axel Kicillof for his expenses; he commented that it is not about “lowering taxes”, but rather aiming for deregulation to help move the economy.
The Minister of Deregulation, Federico Sturzenegger, stated this Saturday morning that it is the governors and mayors who should reactivate public works and not their new political boss, President Javier Milei. He also commented, in a dart to the provincial leaders, that they should not only base their management on handing out mates or giving away graduation trips. The latter sounded especially directed at the governor of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, who had implemented a school aid for these trips and canceled it due to the cut in national funds.
“Public works, a lot of them, are the responsibility of the provinces and municipalities. Then you will transfer that question to them,” he responded on Radio Mitre when referring to the brakes that were imposed since the libertarians landed in the Casa Rosada. “You can have a governor who wants to distribute mates and pay for graduation trips and not do public works. You will have to ask them too,” he insisted ironically.
Convinced that lowering public spending is “strongly reactivating,” Sturzenegger avoided going into macroeconomic issues because he said that was the responsibility of the head of the Treasury, Luis “Toto” Caputo. Thorough in each of his answers, and in no way getting into the words of his Cabinet colleague - with whom he now claims to be a team despite the friction they had during the Macri era - the new official summarized in terms of strictly economic issues: “The Government has a single spokesperson: Luis Caputo.”
He even zigzagged when asked about the controversial statement made this week by the head of the Treasury when he indicated that people were going to have to sell dollars to pay taxes, referring - he claimed - to the fact that he wanted the peso to appreciate. "The Government is a team, we have an excellent coach who defines the roles, mine is in deregulation and Minister Caputo is the one who handles the macro, you can talk to him about it, he is very open, lets not split hairs," he said.
