Coal India (CIL) has marked its entry into the domestic critical mineral sector by emerging as the preferred bidder for the Khattali Chotti graphite block in Alirajpur district, Madhya Pradesh. This win, achieved through the tranche two forward auction held by the Ministry of Mines on July 9, represents CIL’s first foray into non-coal mineral mining.
CIL secured the bid by offering a mining premium of 150.05% of the mineral despatch value, which will be paid to the state of Madhya Pradesh. The company will formally receive the Letter of Intent upon depositing the required performance security. Following this, a composite license will be issued to CIL within a year, contingent on completing all formalities under the NIT timeline.
The Ministry of Mines had called for bids for the tranche two mineral block auction, and CIL, as part of its diversification strategy, won the bid. This development positions CIL to play a significant role in the domestic critical minerals market.
The Khattali Chotti block covers nearly 600 hectares, with fixed carbon content in bedrock samples ranging from 1.99% to 6.50%. |
