Work Detail With an estimated investment of R$8.8 million, Neoenergia plans to build 10 solar power plants with a combined capacity of over 2.1 MW. Neoenergia, the Brazilian subsidiary of Spanish energy company Iberdrola, and the Brazilian Ministry of Defense signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement for the conclusion of agreements with the Armed Forces for the construction of 10 solar power plants and the exchange of 3.6 thousand inefficient lamps for LED models, 40% more economical, in Army, Navy and Aeronautics buildings, located in the Federal District, Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte and São Paulo. With an estimated investment of R$8.8 million (US$1.6 million) carried out by Neoenergia’s Energy Efficiency Program (PEE), regulated by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), the partnership with the Armed Forces envisages the construction of 10 solar power plants with a combined capacity of over 2.1 MWp. The estimated annual generation is 370 MWh/year. In total, the project represents an approximate annual reduction of R$2.1 million in the institutions’ energy bills. The installation and operation of the plants, as well as the replacement of the lamps, are due to be completed before the end of the year. Neoenergia claims that it will reduce the amount of the institutions electricity bills by 2.1 million reais per year (about 385 thousand dollars). Neoenergias energy efficiency actions with the Armed Forces have lasted for more than 10 years. With investments totaling around R$12 million, the partnership provided assistance to 66 units of the Army, Navy and Air Force. In total, another 83,000 inefficient lamps were replaced and five solar power plants were built. This represents a saving of approximately R$2.1 million for the public coffers.
