German flow battery company VoltStorage says its next phase of technological development will boost battery performance by a factor of 20. With the increasing expansion of photovoltaics and wind energy, cost-effective long-duration energy storage (LDES) is becoming increasingly important for a secure electricity supply. Iron-salt batteries are a promising LDES technology, and German specialist VoltStorage has reported progress in its development work. “The successful development, testing and measurement phases carried out so far, as well as the international recognition from science and industry, support the overall concept of the technology,” the company says. VoltStorage is moving forward with the application for new patents. The company says the next phase of development will involve a 20-fold increase in performance, the implementation of fully automated test systems, an expansion of the battery health management system, definition of the form factor concept and an increase in the technology readiness level (TRL). In addition, product definition for the next phase is already planned to begin. “We are already in discussions with potential partners to define solution concepts tailored to their specific needs,” explains Jakob Bitner, co-founder and CEO of VoltStorage. “These include energy providers and large industrial companies looking for cost-effective, sustainable and secure LDES solutions that will enable them to improve the production and use of renewable energy.” In the next phase, development work will be carried out in parallel on different test benches in order to increase speed and collect more test data. One of the so-called development benches will focus on operation with several battery cells, while another will be equipped with a cell three times larger. The work will be carried out at VoltStorages facility in Munich. “We are confident that we will continue to meet the planned schedule in the development of our iron salt battery and that, with continued advancements, we will ultimately be able to create a reliable and efficient LDES solution for the renewable energy market,” said Verena Graf, CTO of VoltStorage. |
