Work Detail US$526 million is being invested for Tasmanian bridge works.A series of bridge works in Tasmania are being carried out costing US$526 million and due for completion in 2025. The Bridgewater Bridge replacement forms a key component of Tasmania’s biggest ever transport infrastructure project. The work was originally due for completion in late 2024 but has faced delays. Contractor McConnell Dowell is building a new dual two-lane bridge over the River Derwent. This will replace the existing lift-span bridge as well as a causeway, built originally by convicts. The overall project includes replacing two bridges crossing the Styx River and strengthening the bridge crossing the River Derwent on Gordon River Road. Included too will be new free-flowing interchanges at Bridgewater and Granton, as well as better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. The Bridgewater Bridge Project will require 1,082 concrete bridge segments, which weigh from 50-90tonnes and are 15m-wide. These are being made in a fabrication facility some 2km from the site using five moulds. The bridge measures 1.2km in length and will site on 42 piles. The project will improve transport around Tasmanias capital, Hobart, once the work is complete. Journey times are expected to be reduced. Replacing the ageing lift bridge will also address concerns over its condition and maintenance needs.
