Work Detail | Benjamin Franklin once said, “In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” I think we can add a few things to that list today starting with 1) political craziness, 2) nonsensical economic indicators and 3) the never-ending search for employees who will make our companies great. Hiring exceptional employees sounds simple, but I think we all know that recruiting has changed. In my day, I was just happy that somebody wanted me. Toss in a social event like softball along with a local establishment that appreciated my loyalty, and you have what we now call employee engagement. Thank goodness the next generation has set the bar a little higher, but that also means we need to work a lot harder at recruiting. We need to sell quality of life in addition to opportunity and working for a great company. This means Grand Island needs to be a destination of choice. If you haven’t noticed, Grand Island has all the amenities the next generation workforce craves. We have sushi bars and outdoor concerts, major entertainment along with scenic bike trails, fitness clubs and never-ending coffee menus. We have major brand restaurants plus those unique venues that give Grand Island numerous dining experiences, downtown living and art bars, as well as flights to Orlando, Vegas, Phoenix/Mesa and Dallas. We have plenty to sell. We just need to get the word out, and that will take a village. I sometimes get asked by young people about how to choose a career path, and I always tell them to find a great company first and many of the things you are looking for will be there, such as career advancement, mentors, social life, etc. Grand Island is loaded with great companies. That part of the message is easy. It is the “life” side that can be tough to paint, and we all need to get out our brushes. As a community poised for growth and prosperity, it is important that all organizations realize they have a role in recruiting or retaining talented individuals in the Grand Island area. When I refer to organizations, I am talking about businesses, educational institutions and organizations like the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce, Grand Island Area Economic Development Corp. and Grand Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. We often hear, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Well, guess what? It takes a community to build a workforce that will keep the economic engine running. Teamwork and never-ending storytelling are two key components of a broad strategy to recruit employees to our community. On Oct. 11, the chamber of commerce will team up with Grand Island businesses for a nontraditional job fair to tell our story to students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Southeast Community College, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Doane University and Concordia University at the Champions Club in Lincoln. Not only will we tell these students about career opportunities with great companies, but we will also sell Grand Island as a destination for life. |
