Work Detail | Motorists on Highway 11 were treated to single-lane traffic and the sight of very large holes on Sept. 1. Gordan Rennie, a representative of the Ministry of Transportation, said the ministry has hired Fowler Construction and WSP Canada as the design-builders for rehabilitation of 12 kilometres of the highway between North Muskoka River Bridge and South Mary Lake Road. The contract is worth $16.3 million. “The project includes guide rail, grading, drainage, granular base and hot mix paving improvements,” said Rennie. “Drainage improvements include frost heave excavations as well as culvert replacements and rehabilitation.” He said work started in late-July and will continue through November 2017. Construction will halt through the winter. “During weekdays for the remainder of this season, traffic should expect 10-minute delays,” he said. He added that a design-build meant the ministry procured one service provider for the project, “which allows for an integrated approach to developing the design and constructing.” Highway bridge repairs in Bracebridge Contractors, in a separate project, also continue their work on the Highway 118 and Taylor Road bridges that cross over Highway 11 in Bracebridge. The work has caused single-lane traffic and delays on the overpasses, while crews repair the bridges. A resident expressed concern last week that she saw no workers at the Highway 118 site during a weekday and wondered if the project was delayed. But Rennie noted crews were on site last week, though had spent some time working underneath the structure and out of view from motorists. “Once they completed the placement on this bridge, they moved this crew and equipment to Taylor Road to complete another concrete pour,” he said. He said the contract, which covers both bridges, remains on schedule. “Both bridges require two construction seasons. This year, work will wind down in November and both lanes will reopen for the winter,” he said. “Next spring, work will resume with single lane closures to complete the project by fall 2017.” |
