Work Detail In its latest update, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), overseeing the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, announced that all civil contracts have been awarded in both Gujarat and Maharashtra. On Wednesday, the Corporation confirmed that contracts for all depot and electrical work have also been awarded. To date, 190 km of viaduct and 321 km of pier work have been completed, with full land acquisition finalized in Gujarat, Dadra Nagar Haveli, and Maharashtra. Key construction milestones include the completion of the first 350-meter mountain tunnel near Zaroli Village in Valsad, Gujarat, and three steel bridges of 70 meters, 100 meters, and 130 meters in Surat, Anand, and Vadodara, respectively. Bridge work on eight out of 24 river crossings has also been completed, with ongoing efforts on major rivers like Narmada, Tapti, Mahi, and Sabarmati. Excavation for Indias first seven km undersea rail tunnel, part of a 21 km tunnel between BKC and Shilphata in Maharashtra, has commenced. The foundation work for all eight bullet train stations in Gujarat—Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati—is completed, while work has begun on the Mumbai Bullet Train station in Maharashtra. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated in March that the bullet train project is expected to be operational by 2026, with initial services between Surat and Bilimora. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor has progressed steadily since work began in November 2021, overcoming initial delays due to land acquisition challenges. The project, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on September 14, 2017, is managed by NHSRCL, incorporated on February 12, 2016. NHSRCL, a Special Purpose Vehicle with equity participation from the Central Government, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, is responsible for financing, constructing, maintaining, and managing the High-Speed Rail Corridor in India. According to the 2015 Joint Feasibility Study report, the project is estimated to cost Rs 108,000 crore with an expected completion period of eight years.
