Work Detail Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) named Rexy and Renny have completed their two-year stint digging two 6.3km paths for the extension of the Eglinton Crosstown rail line in Toronto. The 750 tonne, 131m-long TBMs excavated about 1.2 million tonnes of soil and rock and installed 52,000 pre-cast concrete segments to build 7,433 rings. The two are now taking a well earned break, but construction on the line is continuing on foundations and passageways between the tunnels. An elevated segment will add seven stations to the line. A press release from the government of Ontario said the extension would bring 37,500 people within walking distance of the route and will accommodate 70,000 daily boardings by 2041.
