The storms are getting stronger. Today it rains 11% more than 20 years ago and the City of Buenos Aires seeks to confront this increase in the force of rainfall.
This Tuesday at 7:45, the head of the Buenos Aires City Government, Jorge Macri, will present the new hydraulic plan to prevent flooding in CABA. The objective of this master plan is to reduce the risk of flooding by increasing drainage to the Rio de la Plata, improving water quality and achieving better access to the coasts.
The total amount of investment for this stage involves the disbursement of US$312 million. The upcoming works include 25 kilometers of new hydraulic network, which will benefit 850,000 residents, according to data from the Buenos Aires government.
«We are prioritizing works throughout the city to increase the resilience and protection of more neighbors. Water management is one of the great challenges that cities have for the coming decades and includes the management of water effects, recreational use, nature-based solutions, environmental sanitation and urban development," explained Pablo Bereciartua. , Minister of Infrastructure of Buenos Aires.
What are the next hydraulic works in the City of Buenos Aires?
Works will be carried out in the Medrano stream basin to mitigate flooding in Núñez, Saavedra and Coghlan. This is a pipeline that will have a length of 1.5 kilometers and is expected to benefit 360,000 residents.
On the other hand, the City will begin in two weeks with the works to expand the Parque Sarmiento reservoir, which will prevent flooding in the Saavedra area. This work involves the expansion of another conduit in the Medrano basin. The reservoir will have a capacity of 123,000 cubic meters.
In addition, drainage work will be carried out in the following branches:
Martí 2 and Zuviría branches: Will prevent flooding in Flores, Parque Avellaneda and Villa Lugano. The works will be put out to tender in a month and will have an extension of 3.8 kilometers.
Branches Larralde and City of La Paz. It will benefit 11,000 residents of Núñez, Saavedra and Coghlan. Drainage works will be carried out in the Medrano stream sub-account and will have a length of 2 kilometers.
Medrano Arroyo Efficiency Improvement, regulation and Pumping Station (Núñez, Saavedra and Coghlan)
Costa Rica Branch. Drainage works will be carried out in the Maldonado stream sub-basin. 1 kilometer of work will be done and will prevent flooding in the Palermo neighborhood.
Bajo Costanera Collector and coastal edge
The Buenos Aires Government also plans to integrate the coast into the City. To this end, a work will be put out to tender at the end of the year to prevent pollution of the Rio de la Plata. This is a sewage sanitation conduit to be built with deep tunnels that will cover the entire front of the Rio de la Plata from General Paz to Riachuelo. They hope that the improvement of the water will allow water sports in the future.
In addition, there are other branch works that are already being carried out to mitigate flooding, such as Elcano (Vega Basin), Yerbal (Cildañez Basin) and Acuña de Figueroa and Argerich Norte (Maldonado Basin).
The existing water network includes 83 kilometres of pipelines, which means that 82% of the city is protected against the risk of flooding. However, lately, it rains for a short time but with great force, which means that it is really necessary to prepare the city for the fury of nature. |
