Work Detail PT PLN (Persero), a trailblazer in Indonesia’s energy sector, has taken significant strides in developing the hydrogen ecosystem, a move seen as a catalyst for both the nation’s energy transition and economic growth. This initiative is hailed by the government as a critical step towards positioning Indonesia as a key player in the global low-carbon hydrogen market. Deputy for Coordination of Maritime Sovereignty and Energy at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Jodi Mahardi, emphasized the economic benefits of advancing hydrogen technology in Indonesia. Speaking at the Indonesia International Hydrogen Summit in Jakarta, Mahardi stated, “Indonesia is in a very good position to meet export market demand for low-carbon hydrogen in the future.” In a bid to harness hydrogen’s potential, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has launched a National Hydrogen Strategy, outlining a roadmap for hydrogen development amid the ongoing energy transition. Mahardi underscored the necessity for regional cooperation in Southeast Asia and robust policy support to boost hydrogen production. “These efforts will ensure that PLN can encourage Indonesia’s leadership in the hydrogen economy,” Mahardi added. PLN’s President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, reiterated the company’s commitment to hydrogen development, aligning with its broader goal of supporting Indonesia’s energy transition. “Hydrogen is one of the key pillars in achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060. PLN views hydrogen as future energy to support efforts to reduce emissions,” Prasodjo remarked. Adi Lumakso, PLN’s Generation Management Director, highlighted the company’s progress in establishing an end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem. Utilizing geothermal power plants, solar power plants, and renewable energy certificates, PLN has set up 22 Green Hydrogen Plants (GHP), producing 203 tons of green hydrogen annually. Of this, 75 tons are allocated for plant operations, with the remaining 128 tons available for other applications, including hydrogen vehicles. PLN also boasts Indonesia’s first Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) in Senayan, Jakarta, inaugurated in February 2024. This facility underscores PLN’s commitment to fostering a green hydrogen infrastructure.Lumakso further noted that PLN is actively collaborating with various stakeholders to propel green hydrogen development in Indonesia. “With the various potentials that exist, we believe that Indonesia can become a leader in implementing new, sustainable energy technology,” he concluded.
