The causes of the fire are still being investigated.A fire at a lithium battery factory in South Korea killed at least 22 people on Monday morning, local authorities said. The fire broke out at a facility of battery manufacturer Aricell in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi province, about 50 kilometers southwest of Seoul. After nearly five hours, the fire was extinguished around 3:10 p.m., and firefighters were able to enter the factory, Kim Jin-young, an official with the Hwaseong Fire Department, said at a news conference. The first information indicates that among the deceased there are two Koreans and 20 foreigners, 18 of them of Chinese nationality. Local firefighters told Reuters that the fire at the Aricell battery factory started after several battery cells exploded inside the warehouse, although it remains unclear what caused these explosions in the first place. No official report has yet been issued on the cause of the fire. |
