The European Commission has unveiled the European Solar Academy, marking a pivotal step towards bolstering the continent’s expertise in solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies. This initiative, under the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA), aims to address critical skills gaps in the renewable energy sector and support the EU’s ambitious green energy targets.
With projections indicating a demand for 66,000 skilled workers in the solar PV manufacturing sector by 2030, the Solar Academy seeks to train 100,000 professionals over the next three years. This effort is integral to achieving the EU’s renewable energy goals outlined in the European Green Deal and the REPowerEU Plan, ensuring industrial resilience and global competitiveness.
Modeled after the successful European Battery Academy launched in 2022, the Solar Academy will collaborate closely with industry stakeholders to develop tailored educational content and certification programs. These credentials will validate acquired skills, enhancing workforce mobility across the EU Single Market.
Funded with €9 million from the Single Market Programme, the Solar Academy will be administered by the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT) through its Knowledge and Innovation Community, EIT InnoEnergy. Local partnerships with Vocational and Educational Training (VET) providers, universities, and businesses will facilitate program delivery.
“The European Solar Academy exemplifies our commitment to fostering a skilled workforce capable of driving Europe’s transition to clean energy,” stated Commissioner for Energy. “By equipping professionals with cutting-edge skills, we aim to strengthen Europe’s position in renewable energy manufacturing while attracting global investments.”
This initiative builds upon the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive targets and the EU solar energy strategy, which aims for over 320 GW of solar capacity by 2025 and nearly 600 GW by 2030. It underscores the EU’s dedication to becoming a global leader in net-zero technologies manufacturing, crucial for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
Background efforts under the EU Pact for Skills continue to support the Solar Academy’s goals, promoting sectoral innovation and making renewable energy careers more attractive. Through collaborative partnerships and strategic investments, the EU remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainable economic growth and environmental stewardship. |
