Work Detail While unpackaged 'drinking' water has found a good place in the market with hospitals, banks, health clubs and caterers being its main consumers, experts warn that consumption of water which is not properly treated poses serious threat to human health.
Groundwater is the major source for most of the unpackaged water manufacturing units. As there are good chances of groundwater contamination mainly through sewage, it is very important to treat it scientifically at different stages.
Doctors warn that consuming untreated or contaminated water can cause waterborne diseases. "Contamination of drinking water causes many types of diseases like typhoid, diarrhoea, hepatitis, cholera and other viral infections," said child specialist Dr Vinky Rughwani. "Diarrhoea and typhoid are the most common diseases caused after drinking impure water. It can also lead to jaundice and severe stomach infections," agreed general physician Dr Rafique Ajani.
Stating that water taken from wells or borewells can contain many impurities including fungal growth, microbiologist Amit Gandhe said that step-by-step scientific treatment is a must. "If chillers are used, it should be cleaned everyday. Maintaining hygienic conditions is of utmost important," he added.
Drinking contaminated water regularly can have long-term side effects on health too. "Groundwater mostly gets contaminated with leakages in sewage lines or through septic tanks. It has high level of total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration which essentially needs to be reduced to make water potable. It might also contain other hazardous elements. For instance, drinking water containing fluoride might lead to fluorosis," said environmentalist Kaustav Chatterjee.
